Starting My Allsky Camera Build

·1 min

Stumbled on this blog post linked via Hackaday about a wide angle camera pointed straight up to record the sky and thought it was cool. Turns out there’s an open source project that has all sorts of features right out of the box.

So I started building one.

Creating hole in the enclosure

Step bit didn’t go wide enough so had to manually remove more material. Tried a few different methods but dremel with sanding drum ended up being my favorite. Also had to cut away a rectangle for the bit that pokes out the camera. Came out pretty clean!

Mounting the Raspberry Pi HQ Camera CS

Camera module mounted with M2 screws. Will either glue the nuts up there or use threaded inserts so I can disassemble from below.

Dome sitting on top

The enclosure itself is a weather sealed junction box, but I’ll need to make sure I keep it sealed when I permanently attach the dome. Hence the need to be able to disassemble from below.

Not done yet – still need to weatherproof and find a way to mount it. But thankfully the night was clear so I was able to set it on my balcony to capture a neat timelapse of the aurora borealis.
